Introducing SGI Sail

The Southern Gulf Islands Sailing Cooperative, SGI Sail for short, is a collection of has-been and wanna-be sailors, who have been gifted boats and enthusiasm for a worthwhile cause, i.e. learning or re-learning how to get out on the water and enjoy our 27 foot fleet.

The brainchild of Al Maxwell, long time resident of Mayne Island, SGI Sail started in November 2025 and incorporated in January 2026 with six founding members. As of January 2026 the Board of Directors consists of: Al Maxwell (President), Paul Vajda (Vice President), Bartosz Barcak (Fleet Captain), Don Barthel (Secretary), Michael Jones (Treasurer).

Currently members (application here) must be either a Mayne Island resident or a Mayne Island landowner. There’s an annual membership fee of $1200, and a requirement of service to the co-operative in admin, boat maintenance, or other categories yet to be determined. The board determines eligibility beyond these strict rules, based on criteria which we will determine over time. Martians need not apply.
